It was first performed at the Op\u00e9ra-Comique, Paris on May 18, 1849. It was a huge success and the work regularly appeared in the repertoire of the Op\u00e9ra-Comique until 1869. Adam made use of several familiar pieces of music in the score. The most famous number is a series of variations on\u00a0<em>Ah! vous dirai-je, maman<\/em>\u00a0(better known as the melody of\u00a0<em>Twinkle, twinkle, little star<\/em>\u00a0in the English-speaking world). The opera also quotes the aria\u00a0<em>Tandis que tout sommeille<\/em>\u00a0from Gr\u00e9try&#8217;s\u00a0<em>L&#8217;amant jaloux<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Je br\u00fblerai d&#8217;une flamme \u00e9ternelle<\/em>\u00a0from the same composer&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Le tableau parlant<\/em>\u00a0as well as popular folk tunes, including the Spanish fandango, cachucha and follia. In spite of this, there is little attempt to give the score local colour. The opera was originally intended to be a single act but was split in two to allow the soprano time to recover her breath in a taxing role.\u00a0<em>[source: Wikipedia]<br
